Rebound Orthopedics & Neurosurgery would not confirm reports it had been hit by a cyberattack over the weekend, but all external computer systems have been shut down since Monday. As of Wednesday afternoon, patient and scheduling portals remained unavailable.
In 2018, the health care provider suffered a data breach that it did not reveal to patients for five months.
Efforts to reach the company’s CEO or other leaders were unsuccessful Wednesday. The Columbian called Rebound several times to seek comment. Three phone calls ended when the person answering the phone hung up. On the fourth try, a representative said “no comment” before hanging up.
Rebound’s website Wednesday stated, “Our electronic systems are experiencing technical difficulties. Phone service and response times will be temporarily delayed. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
Patients calling to schedule appointments reached an automated message that said, “Unfortunately our systems are still down. We apologize for the inconvenience and are working around the clock to get our systems back up.”
Although patients were unable to make new appointments, all locations were open and fulfilling previously scheduled appointments.
In October 2018, Rebound Orthopedics & Neurosurgery announced it had experienced a data breach in May of that year that possibly revealed personal information, including Social Security numbers and limited health information. About 2,800 patients were potentially affected by the breach. Rebound at that time said the delay in alerting patients was due to the amount of work computer forensic contractors needed to assess the extent of the breach.
“The privacy and protection of personal information is a top priority for Rebound,” the company said in a 2018 news release, “which sincerely regrets any concern or inconvenience that this matter may cause.”
Rebound Orthopedics & Neurosurgery has served patients in Southwest Washington and Oregon for the past 40 years, operating clinics in Vancouver, Camas, Salmon Creek, Battle Ground and Portland, among other locations.
Each clinic specializes in a variety of services, including orthopedics, neurosurgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, physical therapy, and hand therapy. The company also serves as physicians for the Portland Trail Blazers and the Portland Winterhawks.
